BOM Radar Widget

The Android BOM Radar Widget shows Bureau of Meteorology weather radar images in a widget, automatically updated so you can always keep an eye on the weather.

It’s free, with no ads, and is light on system resources.

Instructions

This is a widget, not an application. You need to add a widget to your device to use it. See the pictures below (repeated in the app itself):

You need to:

<= 4.3 - Go into your apps list (typically a grey circle with nine little grey squares inside) - Choose the Widgets tab up the top; not the Apps tab!
– Drag the BOM Radar Widget onto your desktop
– Now a configuration dialog will appear, choose your location and zoom level and save
– That’s it, the widget is now running
– You can hold on the widget and let go to let you resize it

>= 4.4

– Hold on the home screen in a blank area
– Select the ‘widgets’ icon at the bottom
– Drag the BOM Radar Widget onto your desktop
– Now a configuration dialog will appear, choose your location and zoom level and save

FAQ

Help, it doesn’t work. All it shows is a link to the BOM website.
This is a widget, not an application. You need to add a widget which is a different process from adding a link to an application. See the instructions which are on the same page as the link to the BOM website. There are some more instructions and links above on how to add a widget.

How often does it update the image?
Every hour by default. Enter the application and go to settings to adjust the interval – from 6 minutes to daily – and to toggle whether the widget will wake the device to update or not.

How much data does it use?
Not much – each image is typically from 2KiB to 6KiB, although they vary depending on how complicated each image is. Loading the images is the only data use the app makes.

Can I see the animated radar loop?
You can click on the widget to load the page on the BOM site for the chosen location and zoom showing the animated radar loop.

Can the widget be resized?
Yes, to any size from 1×1 up.

The widget image doesn’t update on my device
So far this has always turned out to be battery-saving software which was preventing the widget from updating. The widget will try to update once an hour as long as a network connection is available.

I’ve installed the app but the widget doesn’t show up in my list of widgets
This sometimes happens with new widgets on Android. Try restarting your device and the widget should show up.

I can’t find the radar for my area
The radar feeds aren’t always named what you’d expect. Take a look at the official BOM list of radars here – BOM Radar Images – click through to the radar near your area and pay attention to what it’s called; you’ll be able to find the same radar using the widget configuration.
